Greg Clark MP, Minister for Universities, Science & Cities, completed a tour of Pendennis Shipyard following his visit to the Department of Environment and Sustainable Investment at the Falmouth campus of Exeter University where he signed the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Growth Deal.
With training and apprenticeships being a key government topic the tour of Pendennis’ award winning scheme provided a valuable insight into one of the UK’s most respected schemes. The Pendennis course trains young people to the high level of skills needed to undertake the complex projects at the superyacht build and refit yard in Falmouth. Since founded over 15 years ago over 150 young people have been trained by the scheme, with over a third of the current workforce either currently training or ex-apprentices who are now full-time employees, some in senior management roles.
Jill Carr, Human Resources Director, initially founded the comprehensive scheme and explained Pendennis’ philosophy “Our apprenticeship has been tailored in conjunction with Cornwall College to provide a level of training and achievement that meets the exacting standards of our industry. Each year 12 local young people are welcomed onto the course and train over four years, developing the skillset to enable them to become full-time members of staff. We are very proud of the course and our apprentices who each year are recognised in national awards as being some of the best in the country.”
During the tour Mr Clark was given a tour of facilities including the 65m sailing yacht Adix who is undergoing a winter refit at the yard. Whilst on board Mr Clark met a group of apprentices who are currently working alongside their trade mentors as they develop skills through on-the-job training. Universities, Science and Cities Minister Greg Clark said: "It is fantastic to see the development and skills opportunities on offer for young people here at the Pendennis Shipyard. This is all part of the Government's long term economic plan to ensure people have the skills they need to get on in life and build a brighter future."
