Protecting yourself from the new COVID variant < Back

By Sirius Technologies

As news of the new COVID variant in the UK has spread, many have been left feeling confused and questioning what this means. We have been inundated with emails from customers asking whether or not our products are still effective against the new variant of COVID-19, so we thought we’d share our understanding.

But in short, yes! Our products are still effective against this new variant. This is why…

Some media outlets have referred to the new variant as a ‘new strain’ when in actual fact, this isn’t scientifically correct. The coronavirus strain responsible for COVID-19 disease in humans, SARS-CoV-2, is still prevalent.

The new variant – called VUI 202021/01 – has been proven to spread much more easily between humans. This is due to a series of mutations in the genetic coding of the virus. This is typical viral behaviour and was to be expected. That being said, there is no evidence to suggest that this new variant is more deadly, nor will it cause more severe symptoms.

So, it’s a new variant and not a new strain?
Yes! The term ‘strain’ is only appropriate when referring to SARS-CoV-2, the virus itself, which is a strain of the wider coronavirus family including SARS & MERS. This new wave of coronavirus in the UK is simply down to a new variant of the existing strain.

Will StereX products still kill this new variant?
Yes, since all StereX products have been tested to the EN14476:2013 + A2 2019 standard, we can say with upmost confidence that our products are just as capable against any new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 strain, as well as many more bacteria & viruses.

Ensure your home, office and business stays sanitised between cleans with our range of long-lasting water-based disinfectants proven to kill SARS-CoV-2. StereX disinfectants provide surfaces with a protective layer capable of killing bacteria & viruses that come into contact with it.
